The Milwaukee Brewers bullpen just got a little deeper, and the timing couldn’t be better. Left-handed reliever Jared Koenig has been activated off the injured list ahead of Friday night’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs, as first reported by MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy.
Koenig hadn’t pitched since April 4 before landing on the IL with an elbow issue. He spent about a month on a rehab assignment, putting up a 3.72 ERA across 11 appearances in the minors. That’s not eye-popping, but the Brewers know what he can do when he’s right.
What Koenig Brings Back
Last season, Koenig was a reliable piece for Milwaukee. He finished with a 2.87 ERA, two saves and 27 holds. Those numbers earn a lot of trust from a coaching staff that leans hard on its bullpen. He’s not a closer, but he’s the kind of arm that makes a manager’s job easier in the sixth and seventh innings.
To make room, the Brewers sent down right-hander Craig Yoho. Yoho had some good moments but also struggled with consistency. The move isn’t a surprise — Koenig is the more proven option.
Woodruff’s Return Already Paying Off
This isn’t the only pitching boost Milwaukee got this week. Brandon Woodruff came off the IL earlier and immediately looked like his old self. He threw six scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds in a 2-1 win that went 10 innings. Woodruff had been out since late April with right shoulder inflammation, and there was real concern he might not snap back. But he did, and that changes the outlook for this rotation.
The Brewers have been banged up here and there all season, but they keep winning. They’re sitting at 49-29, first place in the NL Central, and that record isn’t a fluke. The offense has been productive, the defense is solid, and the pitching staff keeps finding ways to get outs even when key guys are missing.
Getting Koenig back doesn’t fix every issue. But it gives Milwaukee another trusted arm for a stretch where every division game matters. And with Woodruff already dealing again, this team looks like it could be a real problem for the rest of the league as summer drags on.
