Brandon Aiyuk is not subtle about this. The 49ers wide receiver, who hasn’t played a down since the 2024 season and missed all of 2025 with a knee injury, posted a picture of Mark Rypien on his Instagram story Saturday. Rypien is holding up the Lombardi Trophy after Washington won Super Bowl XXVI in 1992. The photo has #StickTalk on it, which is Aiyuk’s personal brand tag. It’s the second time in a week he’s pointed directly at Washington.

This comes right after his Father’s Day video where he chanted “Go Commanders!” three times into his phone, then signed off by telling fans to “Raise Hell, take command.” That clip circulated fast. The football internet did what it does — speculation went from ember to open flame in about 12 hours.

Aiyuk and the 49ers have had a fractured relationship for a while now. He signed a four-year, $120 million extension before the 2024 season, then got hurt and hasn’t played since. San Francisco has moved on in some ways. They drafted younger receivers, they adjusted their cap. The sense around the league, according to multiple reports, is that a trade is inevitable. Maybe even before training camp.

The Commanders finished 5-12 last season, third in the NFC East. They need playmakers. Terry McLaurin is still elite, but the depth behind him is thin. Washington has cap space and a GM in Adam Peters who came from the 49ers front office. He knows Aiyuk well. He was there when they drafted him. That connection isn’t lost on anyone.

Aiyuk turns 29 before next season. The injury history is real — he’s had knee, hamstring and core issues over the years. But when healthy, he’s a 1,000-yard receiver who can win at every level. Washington would have to decide what they’re willing to give up for a player coming off a lost season. San Francisco, for its part, would likely want draft capital and maybe a young player in return.

The Rypien post isn’t a trade request. It’s not a contract demand. But it’s clearly a message. Aiyuk keeps choosing Washington in his public moments. The posts keep getting noticed. And the silence from both sides — no denials, no “he’s our guy” statements — is telling.

Aiyuk has made his preference known. Now it’s up to the two front offices to figure out whether Washington actually wants to make this happen.
