Bournemouth Drops Alex Scott Asking Price as United Weigh Alternatives

Manchester United just got a bit of breathing room in their midfield shopping spree. Bournemouth have reportedly lowered their asking price for Alex Scott to around £60 million, down from the £80 million they wanted earlier this summer. That shift could change how United approaches the rest of their transfer business.

Scott, 22, has been on United’s radar for a while now. He’s got two full Premier League seasons under his belt, and he fits the profile Ineos has been chasing: young, hungry, already tested in England. He can carry the ball through pressure, reads the game well, and works his tail off off the ball. Last season he put up four goals and an assist in 39 appearances across all competitions, starting all but three of those games.

The original plan was different. United wanted Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, but the Hammers are holding firm at £80 million. Tottenham has also entered that race, and United isn’t interested in getting dragged into a bidding war. Personal terms with Fernandes have reportedly been agreed, but the price tag is the sticking point.

Scott as the fallback option

If West Ham won’t budge, Scott becomes the obvious next move. And the price drop matters. A £20 million swing is not nothing for a club that still needs to be careful with how it spends after years of overpaying. United have also been linked with Atalanta’s Ederson, but that deal hasn’t closed yet, and there’s still uncertainty around Manuel Ugarte’s future at the club.

Bournemouth, for their part, would rather keep Scott. They’ve been trying to get him to sign a new deal with a £75 million release clause, but the player hasn’t put pen to paper yet. That leaves the door open for clubs like United and Arsenal, who according to the Daily Mail are both tracking him closely.

The Cherries aren’t panicking, but they know interest is heating up. Dropping the price to £60 million might be a play to get something done before the window gets complicated. Or it could be a signal that they’re willing to deal if the right offer comes in.

The Fernandes question

There’s no question Fernandes is the flashier option. He’s widely seen as one of the best young midfielders in Europe, and he could transform what Michael Carrick wants to do in the middle of the park. But at £80 million, West Ham is asking for a statement fee. United has been burned before by overpaying for names. Ineos seems determined not to repeat that mistake.

And honestly, Scott isn’t a consolation prize. He’s got the pressing instincts, the dribbling ability, and the tactical flexibility to be a real contributor. The question is whether United moves quickly or waits to see if West Ham bends first. Either way, Bournemouth just made the decision a little easier.
