Barcelona Eyes Another Loan Play After Rashford Model Worked Once

Barcelona is trying to get creative again this summer. After the Marcus Rashford loan from Manchester United last year went reasonably well, the club is looking at AC Milan’s Rafael Leão as a similar kind of move.

Leão has openly said he wants out of Milan. The 27-year-old winger wants a new challenge, and Milan knows he’s probably gone before the window closes. Ideally, the Italian side wants a straight sale. They need cash to rebuild for new manager Ruben Amorim, and they’re reportedly asking for something in the €60-70 million range.

But that number might not show up. And if it doesn’t, things get more interesting.

According to reports out of Spain and Italy (Mundo Deportivo citing Gazzetta dello Sport), Barcelona has already reached out to Milan’s front office earlier this month. They’re not going to drop that kind of money on a permanent transfer. Their finances don’t really allow for it, and they’ve been down that road before. Instead, they’re looking at a loan with terms similar to what they worked out for Rashford.

How the Rashford deal could shape this

Last summer, Barcelona took Rashford on loan from Manchester United when United wanted to offload his wages and get him playing time elsewhere. It worked out fine. Rashford wasn’t spectacular but he contributed, and United covered part of his salary. Barcelona got attacking depth without a massive financial hit.

They want to do the same with Leão. Same structure. Same logic. Low risk, potential upside.

Leão is a different kind of player though. He’s faster, more direct, and at 27 he’s in his prime. At Milan, he’s been inconsistent but capable of moments that win games on his own. Barcelona’s attack has been good but not great, and adding someone who can beat defenders one-on-one would give them a different look.

The big question is whether Milan agrees to a loan. They’d rather sell, obviously. But if the offers don’t come, and Leão keeps pushing for an exit, a loan with an option to buy later could be the compromise nobody loves but everybody takes.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has been involved in the talks, according to the reports. The club has not confirmed anything publicly, which is standard. But the fact that they made contact at all suggests this is more than just agent-driven chatter.

Leão’s camp has been working behind the scenes for months to find a way out. He wants a bigger stage, and Barcelona offers that even in their current financial mess. Whether they can actually pull it off depends on Milan’s patience and whether any other club steps up with real money.

Right now, the situation is waiting on someone else to blink.
