Julian Alvarez wants out of Atletico Madrid. He’s been clear about that. He told ESPN last month he wants to fulfill his dream. But wanting something and getting it are two different things, and right now Atletico is making that very clear.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta went public this week with what he called a ‘very significant offer’ for the 24-year-old Argentina striker. He also warned it wouldn’t sit on the table forever. ‘If they are willing to accept it, fantastic, but it won’t be unlimited,’ Laporta told SER. ‘We have to make a decision.’
That offer? It’s apparently been rejected already. Atletico’s stance is about as hardline as it gets. CEO Miguel Angel Gil didn’t mince words: ‘We didn’t accept an offer of €100 million, and we won’t accept one of €150 million or even €200 million.’
That’s not a negotiator leaving room. That’s a door slamming shut.
Laporta’s Deadline Bounce-Back
Laporta didn’t just roll over. He hinted that Barcelona has other targets if this drags too long. He name-dropped Deco’s work on signing Karim Adeyemi, which is apparently close. But the subtext is clear: Barca wants Alvarez. Alvarez wants Barca. Atletico doesn’t care.
‘The player has spoken out, and that’s why the issue is still open,’ Laporta said. ‘It’s clear that the player wants a change of scenery.’
Then came Enrique Cerezo, Atletico’s president, with a response that felt less like a statement and more like a mic drop. ‘Joan Laporta is a good friend,’ Cerezo said. ‘He knows very well, as do all of you, where Julian Alvarez will be playing next year.’
He didn’t say ‘at Atletico’ but he didn’t have to.
Where Does This Leave Arsenal?
Arsenal has been sniffing around Alvarez for over a year. Mikel Arteta reportedly considered another run at the World Cup winner if the Barcelona move fell through. But here’s the thing: Alvarez wants Barcelona. He said so. His heart is set on Camp Nou.
And with Atletico refusing to sell to a direct La Liga rival anyway — they’ve already rejected at least one Barcelona bid — Arsenal might actually have a clearer path if they can convince the player to pivot. But that’s a big if. Alvarez has already told the world this is about fulfilling a dream, not just changing clubs.
For now, the standoff continues. Barcelona has two weeks, by Laporta’s own timeline. Atletico has a release clause of €500 million and no interest in negotiating. Alvarez is stuck in the middle. The dream is alive, but the wall isn’t moving.
