Atalanta’s Sarri Shuts Door on United’s Ederson Pursuit

Manchester United’s messy summer with Atalanta midfielder Ederson might finally be over. New Atalanta manager Maurizio Sarri made that pretty clear Friday when he told reporters the Brazilian is staying put.

United walked away from a deal for Ederson earlier this window after medical checks raised red flags about his fitness. It was a late U-turn that caught a lot of people off guard, especially since INEOS had already agreed on terms with the Serie A side. But the club got cold feet and pulled out.

Sarri wasn’t coy about where things stand now.

“Ederson will happily stay,” Sarri said, via Il Messaggero. “I’ve spoken to him and he’s ready to come back early from vacation to be with us.”

That doesn’t sound like a guy planning to lose his best midfielder. And honestly, it matches what Fabrizio Romano has been saying — that United aren’t likely to circle back for Ederson this summer.

Why United bailed in the first place

The Red Devils went into the offseason needing to replace Casemiro, who left as a free agent. Ederson looked like the obvious choice. He’d just helped United finish third in the Premier League, and his connection to Brazil made the fit feel natural.

But the transfer got complicated fast. Brazil’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup should’ve cleared the way, except United’s medical staff flagged concerns during his physical. The team hasn’t confirmed specifics, but reports indicate they worried about his long-term durability. So they pulled the plug.

Since then, United has moved on. They signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea last week and brought in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. That’s two midfielders in rapid succession, which tells you they’re trying to fill the hole quickly.

Still, they could use more bodies. Manuel Ugarte tore his ACL at the World Cup and will miss significant time. United will play Champions League football next season plus three domestic competitions. That’s a lot of games for a thin midfield.

They’ve been linked with Roma’s Manu Kone recently. But Sarri’s comments suggest Ederson is no longer a realistic option.

What’s next for United’s midfield

So United still need at least one more midfielder before the window closes. INEOS hasn’t tipped their hand on who the next target is, but the club is clearly prioritizing depth over star power at this point.

All eyes will be on the preseason friendly against Wrexham where Andrey Santos could make his first appearance for the club. That’s if he’s ready to go. Either way, United’s midfield rebuild is happening in real time — messy, imperfect, but moving forward.

As for Ederson, he’ll report back to Atalanta early and pick up where he left off. Sarri made that much clear. And unless United has a sudden change of heart, that chapter is closed.
