Arsenal’s $87M Opening Bid for PSG’s Bradley Barcola Beats Man United to the Punch

Paris Saint-Germain just won back-to-back Champions League titles. They have Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, and Desire Doue as their starting front three. And that means Bradley Barcola — a 23-year-old with 21 goals and 21 assists in 2024/25 — is spending too much time on the bench for anyone’s comfort. Especially his own.

So now there’s a real race for him. And Arsenal might already be ahead of Manchester United.

Arsenal’s opening bid makes noise

According to Caught Offside, the Gunners are preparing a bid worth around €80 million ($70 million). That’s below the €100 million PSG wants, but it’s a real offer. Not a phone call. Not a meeting to talk about talking. An actual number on the table. That matters when you’re trying to convince a player you’re serious.

Arsenal just won their first Premier League title in 22 years. Mikel Arteta has that team rolling. Adding Barcola to a squad that already includes Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Gabriel Martinelli makes them deeper and scarier. And for Barcola, it’s a chance to be the guy on a team that’s winning now, not waiting for the project to come together in a few years.

United’s priorities are elsewhere

Manchester United have talked to Barcola’s representatives. That’s been confirmed by multiple reports. But here’s the problem: United’s biggest need this summer is midfield. Michael Carrick’s engine room is stalling, and INEOS has made it clear the bulk of their budget is going there. Not to a winger.

That doesn’t mean United wouldn’t love to have Barcola. They just can’t afford him right now. Not at €100 million. Not when they also need to fix the middle of the park. It’s a timing thing. A year too early for the long-term plan, as some around Old Trafford have reportedly put it.

And that’s why they’re looking at West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville instead. He’d cost less than half of what PSG wants for Barcola. Different tier of player, but the price is right for a club working within limits.

Barcola’s numbers tell two different stories

Last season, Barcola put up 21 goals and 21 assists across all competitions. He was electric. This season? He’s at 20 goals and assists combined — a significant drop. He didn’t start the Champions League semifinal or the final. PSG won the whole thing without him on the field for key moments.

That’s the problem with being a backup on a superteam. Your numbers dip. Your confidence takes a hit. You start wondering if you need to leave to get your career back on track. And Barcola, who came up through Lyon’s academy, seems to be at that point now.

Other suitors still lurking

It’s not just Arsenal and United. Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Napoli have all been contacted. That’s basically everyone. But Arsenal’s offer — the first real bid on the table — gives them an early edge.

PSG’s preference is still to extend Barcola’s contract (which runs through 2028). But if he wants out, they’ll listen. And the bidding war is likely just starting. €80 million won’t be the final number.

For United, this one probably slips away unless they can move some players and reshuffle their priorities. For Arsenal, this is the kind of signing that turns a good title defense into a potential dynasty. And for Barcola, it’s the chance to finally be the main man. Not just a really good player stuck behind three really great ones.
