Arsenal is quietly closing in on Christos Tzolis, and if you’re scratching your head, you’re not alone. The Greek winger wasn’t exactly on anyone’s radar for a big summer splash at the Emirates. But the club’s decision to pursue him for around £33.8 million actually makes a ton of sense once you dig into it.
Tzolis just finished an absurd season at Club Brugge. We’re talking 22 goals and 29 assists in all competitions. He won Belgian Pro League Player of the Year. The guy has now scored 20-plus goals in back-to-back seasons in Belgium, and he earned that move after a killer loan stint at Fortuna Dusseldorf. Yeah, his first go-round in England with Norwich wasn’t great — zero goals in 14 Premier League matches back in 2021-22. But he was 20 years old on a team that got relegated. Context matters.
What Mikel Arteta likes here is the versatility. Tzolis mostly plays left wing but has logged minutes on the right and even through the middle. That kind of flexibility fits Arteta’s system, especially since the manager wants attackers who bring an unpredictable element. Add in that Tzolis is genuinely two-footed, brings real pace, and is still only 27 years old. He’s basically a younger, faster version of Leandro Trossard, who just got sold to Besiktas. That replacement slot is now open.
This isn’t the only move Arsenal is planning
Bringing in Tzolis doesn’t close the door on a bigger name. The club still has interest in players like Morgan Rogers and Bradley Barcola, though those deals are more complicated and expensive. Tzolis is the simpler get — lower risk, lower fee, and he fills the immediate gap on the left without burning through the budget. Arsenal can still go make a marquee signing alongside him if the right opportunity pops up.
The fee itself isn’t crazy in today’s market. £33.8 million for a guy coming off back-to-back 20-goal seasons in Europe? That’s not a huge gamble. If his Belgian form translates even partially to the Premier League, Arsenal gets a legitimate goal threat for a reasonable price. If it doesn’t, they’ve still got depth and can pivot in future windows.
Arteta clearly values unpredictability in attack. Tzolis brings that. He also brings experience in multiple leagues and a point to prove after flopping in England the first time. Sometimes the smartest signings aren’t the loudest ones.
