Arsenal Let Another Young Midfielder Walk. Newcastle Is Ready to Pounce.

Newcastle United is making a serious push to sign 16-year-old midfielder Kyran Thompson after his contract at Arsenal expired last week. The teenager is now a free agent, and the Magpies are among several Premier League clubs lining up for his signature.

Thompson originally left West Ham’s academy in 2024 to join Arsenal. At the time, Newcastle wanted him. So did Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City. He picked the Gunners over their pitch and the promise of a development plan. But two years later, he’s on the move again.

The reason is pretty straightforward. Thompson didn’t get the first-team pathway guarantees he was hoping for. Arsenal didn’t lock him down to a new deal, and now he’s exploring other options. For a 16-year-old with his reputation, that’s a gamble for any club that signs him. But it’s also an opportunity.

Newcastle’s long-running interest

This isn’t a new flirtation. Newcastle tried to bring Thompson to St. James’ Park back in 2024. The club’s recruitment staff have kept tabs on him since. Now that he’s available without a transfer fee — though there would be compensation due because of his age and training status — the Magpies see a window to finally get their guy.

Eddie Howe’s staff want to stock the youth ranks with players who can realistically push for first-team minutes. Thompson fits that profile. He’s an English midfielder with technical ability and a frame that’s still filling out. The club’s project under the Saudi ownership has emphasized buying young and developing internally. Thompson is exactly the kind of signing that philosophy is built around.

But Newcastle isn’t alone in this. Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Liverpool are all watching the situation. Thompson’s camp will have options. The question is which club can offer the clearest route to senior football.

Arsenal’s youth exodus continues

Thompson isn’t the only young player Arsenal is losing this summer. Mishel Nduka, another 16-year-old, is also out of contract and drawing interest from Manchester City, United, Spurs, and Liverpool. Arsenal offered Nduka improved terms because they see him as a future star, but he hasn’t signed yet. City in particular is pushing hard to pull him away from north London.

For a club that prides itself on developing young talent — Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly — losing two promising teenagers in the same window stings. The Gunners have a strong track record, but they can’t keep everybody. The math on squad limits and wage structures is ruthless, even at 16.

Newcastle will hope they can offer Thompson something Arsenal couldn’t: a genuine belief that he can break through. Talks are expected in the coming days. Whether that’s enough against richer clubs with bigger names remains to be seen. But the Magpies have been here before with this kid. This time, they want to finish the job.
