Manchester United’s midfield rebuild just got more complicated. Arsenal has entered the picture for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, and the price tag is starting to take shape.
According to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Bournemouth is pushing Scott to sign a new contract that would include a £75 million release clause. That’s a lot of money for a player whose current deal runs through 2028 — meaning there are only two years left if you’re counting from now. The Cherries want to lock him in on friendly terms, but both United and Arsenal are reportedly balking at that number.
Why the Price Matters
Scott is 22, English, and plays with the kind of composure that makes you forget he’s still young. He’s been Bournemouth’s midfield anchor, and the club is understandably nervous about losing him. But dropping £75 million for a guy with two years left on his deal? That’s a hard sell, especially when INEOS is already sweating the finances on their other targets.
United already lost out on Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali because of costs. They’re currently trying to pry Mateus Fernandes away from West Ham, but the Hammers aren’t making it easy. Add Tottenham and Real Madrid to that mix, and the Red Devils can’t afford to focus on just one name.
Arsenal Sees an Opening
Scott’s refusal to sign an extension so far has caught Arsenal’s attention. The Gunners are sniffing around, sensing that Bournemouth might eventually have to sell for less than that release clause. One source close to the situation told Whitwell: It’s a little bit of a development, but Arsenal are interested in him. That might be a rival for United if they want to progress with the Scott situation. Bournemouth are trying to get him to sign a new contract and put a release clause in there for £75m. That’s more than clubs would be willing to pay with two years left on his deal.
If both Premier League heavyweights decide the price is too rich, Bournemouth might have to adjust. Or they might just keep him and hope he signs that extension anyway.
Plan B: Tyler Adams
INEOS has options. If Scott doesn’t work out, United has also been keeping tabs on Scott’s Bournemouth teammate Tyler Adams. He’s a more natural defensive midfielder and would cost significantly less. There’s been some quiet talk between United and Bournemouth about multiple players this summer, so don’t be surprised if a deal for someone else emerges instead.
For now, it’s a waiting game. Scott is talented enough to start for a top club, but the question is whether United or Arsenal will blink first on that price. Bournemouth is playing hardball, and they’ve got the contract length to do it.
