Lisandro Martinez was down inside the first half of the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. He didn’t get back up. Argentina’s coaching staff knew it was bad before anyone else did. Emi Martinez waved toward the bench, and Nicolas Otamendi was already stripped and ready before most fans realized what was happening.
Martinez had just picked up a yellow card for a heavy challenge on Mikel Oyarzabal. He went through the back of the Spanish forward and, in the process, something went wrong. He tried to shake it off but couldn’t. That’s never a good sign for a guy who already fought back from an ACL tear to make it to this stage.
For Argentina, this is a nightmare. For Manchester United, it might be worse.
The timing could not be worse
Michael Carrick just got the Manchester United job full-time after a second caretaker spell. He finished third in the Premier League last season and brought Champions League football back to Old Trafford for the first time since 2023. The club backed him this summer. They spent big on Andrey Santos, added Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and brought in Karl Darlow on a free. The plan was to build on momentum.
But the defense is suddenly thin. Martinez is the left-footed center back Carrick leaned on in the second half of last season after he came back from the ACL injury. Matthijs de Ligt dealt with a lower back issue all through last year. Harry Maguire is still there. Leny Yoro, the young French defender, is in the mix. And Ayden Heaven is the only other natural left-footed option in the squad right now.
That is not a lot of room for error.
What United loses without Martinez
Martinez is their most aggressive defender. He steps up, he breaks up transitions, and he plays the ball forward faster than anyone else in that back line. Without him, Carrick might have to adjust the whole shape. Or at least the way United builds out of pressure. The team has not confirmed the severity of the injury yet, but the way he limped off in a final he desperately wanted to play in says plenty.
You don’t wave for a sub in a World Cup final unless you’re done.
United’s preseason schedule starts in two weeks. Carrick will have to figure out if Maguire and Yoro can hold things together until Martinez gets back, or if the club needs to make another move before the window closes. The Santos deal took the cap space. Tielemans wasn’t cheap either. But if Martinez needs surgery, this defense could look a lot different come August.
Fans online have already started asking if United should pivot back to the market for another center back. Nobody is panicking yet. But the question is hanging there.
