Ecuador’s 2026 World Cup campaign is on life support. And the man who once captained the national team is apologizing to the entire country for it.
Antonio Valencia took to social media this week to address the growing frustration back home after Ecuador stumbled through their first two group stage matches without a single win. The former Manchester United star didn’t hold back in his message.
“I want to apologize to all the people of Ecuador, to everyone who traveled from so far away, to everyone who supported the team from the beginning,” Valencia wrote on X. “We know the frustration you feel, but we must remain united as a country. Please don’t be so harsh with your messages and comments toward the players.”
The situation is pretty dire. Ecuador opened their tournament with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the United States, courtesy of a late winner from United forward Amad. Then came the real gut punch. They played Curacao to a 0-0 draw — the same Curacao team that got hammered 7-1 by Germany in their previous match.
That result has put manager Sebastián Beccacece and his squad in a must-win spot against Germany. Even a win might not be enough, depending on other results. It’s not the kind of position anyone expected from a team that has produced some serious talent over the years.
Valencia tried to walk a line between apologizing and protecting the current group. He asked fans to lay off the criticism. “They are the ones who most want to bring joy to the country,” he said. “Let’s support this new generation. There are many changes to be made and a long road ahead.”
A long way from the Valencia days
It feels like a different era. Valencia was the kind of player who could drag a team forward by force of will. United signed him from Wigan Athletic in June 2009 for roughly £16 million — brought in to fill the absurd void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid. He managed it about as well as anyone could, putting up 7 goals and 13 assists in his first season and earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Year.
Over 339 appearances for United, Valencia won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League. He captained both club and country. He never had to apologize for a performance like this.
Now Ecuador heads into a game against Germany knowing the World Cup is probably over. Valencia’s apology might help cool the anger for a few days. But if they get rolled by Germany, the real conversation starts.
