Sweden’s World Cup survival should have been a moment of pure relief. Instead, it turned into a comedy of errors thanks to Anthony Elanga.

The Newcastle winger scored a stunning equalizer against Japan to secure a 1-1 draw. That result was enough to send Sweden through to the knockout stage as one of the best third-place finishers. But when the final whistle blew, Elanga dropped to the turf and punched the ground in frustration. He had no idea his team had already advanced.

“I just shouted: ‘Come on, we can go for more’,” Elanga told Swedish media afterward. “I’m glad we’re through. I didn’t know that at the end.”

Neither did anyone watching. His reaction was so dramatic that teammates had to rush over and explain the situation. Alexander Isak confirmed he had to “scold” Elanga for the display.

Graham Potter Saw the Funny Side

Sweden head coach Graham Potter said the team had held a meeting before the game to walk through exactly what qualification scenarios they needed. Apparently Elanga missed that part.

“That explains a few things,” Potter said with a laugh when asked about Elanga’s reaction. “We couldn’t have been clearer, but he was obviously thinking of something else. Bless him. I love him at the moment but, dear me.”

Potter was more serious when evaluating the match itself. He praised Jacob’s distribution in goal and credited Elanga’s pace on the counter-attack as a key threat. But he reserved special praise for Victor Gyokeres, the striker who played a physical, back-to-goal role alongside Isak.

“I thought he was outstanding,” Potter said. “Outstanding performance for a back-to-goal center forward. It’s just amazing.”

The 1-1 draw meant Japan finished second in Group F behind the Netherlands. Sweden scraped through with four points and now face a knockout matchup TBD. Potter confirmed the team will stick with the shape they used in the World Cup playoffs, which allows both Gyokeres and Isak to start together.

The Bigger Picture

Elanga’s ignorance is funny now because Sweden survived. If they had lost and missed the knockout round on goal difference, it would have been a different story. As it stands, Potter’s men are through and Elanga has a story to live down for years.

Sweden’s knockout opponent hasn’t been announced yet. But if Elanga isn’t sure how the bracket works, someone should probably tell him before kickoff.
