Andrey Santos Leaves Chelsea for Man United in $62 Million Midfield Move

Manchester United announced Monday they’ve pulled off a direct Premier League transfer, landing Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for a reported $62 million. The 22-year-old arrives at Old Trafford with a modest stat line — three goals, four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions for the Blues — but the club clearly sees him as the long-term answer in the middle of the park.

The deal, first reported by The Athletic, comes a little less than two years after Santos joined Chelsea in a high-profile move from Vasco da Gama. He never quite cracked the starting XI in London, managing only 25 starts out of 43 total appearances. But a loan spell at Strasbourg told a different story. From February 2024 through June 2025, Santos played a season and a half in Ligue 1, wearing the captain’s armband at times for the French side.

That stretch seems to have convinced United’s recruitment team. The Brazil international has six senior caps for the Seleção and debuted in March 2023. He didn’t make the World Cup squad, but he’ll get Champions League football this season after United finished third in the Premier League.

Here’s the thing about Santos. He’s not a finished product yet. At 22, he’s still figuring out his best position — box-to-box, holding, or pushed higher. Chelsea never gave him a real run to settle in one spot. United might be betting that consistency of playing time unlocks what Strasbourg saw.

There’s also chatter about another midfielder. Reports out of France mention Belgian international Youri Tielemans as a possible arrival. He had a strong World Cup before Belgium fell 2-1 to Spain in the quarterfinals — a game he missed after getting injured during warm-ups. But that’s still speculation. United have not confirmed any other moves.

On paper, United needed a younger body in midfield after last season’s patchy form. Santos gives them that: athletic, comfortable on the ball, capably two-footed. Whether he translates that into Premier League consistency is the open question. Chelsea fans might wonder why they didn’t keep him around. United fans will hope that question ages well.

Santos is expected to join training this week as the club prepares for preseason friendlies and the Champions League group-stage draw.
