André Onana is heading back to Trabzon. The Cameroon international has rejoined Trabzonspor on another season-long loan from Manchester United, as first reported by L’Équipe. No buy option this time either.
The 30-year-old spent last season with the Turkish club, making 33 appearances and helping them lift the Turkish Cup. That trophy was his first piece of silverware since the 2024 FA Cup with United, which says something about how the last few years have gone for him.
Two seasons at United. One complicated story.
Onana arrived from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, brought in as a modern sweeper-keeper who could play out from the back. The idea made sense. The execution never quite matched the concept. His first season was uneven, some spectacular saves mixed with erratic decision-making. By year two, the criticism from English media and fans had grown loud enough that United started shopping around.
Trabzonspor took him on loan in 2025, and it looks like that arrangement worked well enough for everyone — except maybe United, who still don’t have a clear long-term answer in goal.
What this means now
Onana has 53 caps for Cameroon and isn’t short on experience. He’s still only 30 for a goalkeeper, prime age really. But the fact that United couldn’t find a permanent buyer — and that Trabzonspor didn’t push for an option to buy — suggests the market views him as a rental, not a solution.
Meanwhile, United’s goalkeeping situation remains unsettled. They’ve got Altay Bayındır on the roster and some younger options coming through, but nobody has grabbed the job. Sending Onana out again without a permanent exit just delays the decision.
The club announced the loan with a Black Panther-style video, which is fun. But the underlying reality is less cinematic: a player who cost big money and never fully settled is now basically a two-year placeholder in a league far removed from the Premier League spotlight.
Onana will get minutes, he’ll compete for another cup run, and he’ll be back on United’s books next summer. Unless something changes, this story isn’t over — it’s just on pause.
