Anaheim Just Entered the Darnell Nurse Sweepstakes and the Timing Makes Total Sense

The Darnell Nurse trade saga just got a new character. And honestly, it makes way more sense than it looks at first glance.

Anaheim has emerged as a serious suitor for the Edmonton defenseman, according to multiple sources. The team’s blue line is about to be gutted. Olen Zellweger got shipped to Buffalo on Friday. John Carlson told GM Pat Verbeek he’s not re-signing and will test free agency on July 1. Jacob Trouba and Radko Gudas might walk too. That leaves the Ducks with three defensemen under contract — Jackson LaCombe, Drew Helleson and Tristan Luneau — plus two restricted free agents in Pavel Mintyukov and Tyson Hinds.

So yeah, they need bodies back there.

Nurse’s no-trade clause is the real wild card

Nurse has a no-trade clause, and he reportedly has four teams on his approved list so far: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Boston. Anaheim isn’t on that list yet, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get added. The Ducks just bounced the Oilers out of the playoffs in six games, so there’s some recent bad blood there. But Nurse also grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. That’s not exactly close to California, but it’s not like he’s from Vancouver either.

Money is the real question. Nurse carries a $9.25 million cap hit through 2030-31. That’s an anchor of a contract. But the Ducks have over $44 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia. They could absorb it without blinking. And they need to hit the cap floor somehow.

Nurse is 31 years old. He just played all 82 games. He’s still logging 20-plus minutes a night, even if his offensive numbers have dipped. Five years left on that deal is a lot, but the cap is going up. In two or three years, $9.25 million might not look so brutal.

What Edmonton wants here

Oilers GM Stan Bowman is actively shopping Nurse. That’s not a secret. The question is whether he can get someone to take the full contract without retention or a sweetener. The Ducks have the space and the need, but Nurse has to want to go there. That’s the sticking point.

Anaheim’s rebuild is further along than most people think. They have young pieces, cap room and a playoff series win under their belts. Adding a veteran like Nurse — even at that cap hit — could make sense if the price is right. The Oilers want picks and maybe a young forward in return. The Ducks have both.

This one could drag into the summer, or it could happen fast. Either way, the Pacific Division just got a little more interesting.
