You can always count on Alexi Lalas to bring the heat. And not just with his analysis.
The Fox soccer analyst and former USMNT star has been catching it from fans during the World Cup broadcasts. And instead of letting the criticism slide, he’s been firing back with some serious one-liners. It’s become a running subplot of the tournament coverage, honestly.
One fan took to X to complain about the broadcast cutting to “rich people” in the crowd. Lalas didn’t just ignore it. He responded directly.
“FIFA aren’t cutting to rich people, they’re cutting to good-looking people,” Lalas posted. “That’s why they didn’t cut to you. Apologies for the confusion.”
That’s not the kind of thing you see from most on-air analysts. Most of them play it safe. Lalas clearly doesn’t care about that.
Another fan posted something even more direct: “God, I can’t stand you.” Lalas didn’t hesitate. He shot back: “I’ll pass it along to Him.”
The guy has a way with words, you have to give him that.
Why Lalas Keeps Getting Under People’s Skin
Part of it is just his personality. He’s confident, sometimes comes off as smug, and he doesn’t back down from anyone. But there’s more to it. Lalas actually played at the highest level. He was a key figure for the US in the 1990s, including the 1994 World Cup. So when he talks about the game, he knows what he’s saying. That doesn’t stop fans from piling on, though.
The World Cup has brought a lot of casual viewers into soccer. And some of them aren’t used to hearing a former player be that blunt. They’re used to the more polished, corporate style you see in other sports. Lalas is the opposite. He’ll say what he thinks, even if it pisses people off.
Fox has leaned into this. His segments get attention. People either love him or hate him, and that’s kind of the point. You don’t hire Alexi Lalas if you want a boring broadcast.
As the US preps for its Round of 16 matchup against Belgium, there’s real excitement around the team. But for a certain portion of the audience, the real entertainment might be watching what Lalas says next to the haters.
