Sergei Bobrovsky Leaves Panthers for Maple Leafs. His First Comments Were Unexpected.

Sergei Bobrovsky thought he was staying in Florida. He said it himself. A few weeks ago, the two-time Stanley Cup champion was preparing for another season with the Panthers. That didn’t happen.

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed him to a three-year deal in free agency, and on Friday, Bobrovsky finally explained what went through his mind when the offer came.

“First of all, I’m excited for the opportunity,” Bobrovsky said. “To be honest, I thought I’m going to stay in Florida. But things work out like how they work out, and the Leafs put their trust in me, they put their belief, and they give me a good opportunity to join the historical, legendary team and be part of this organization.”

Why Toronto went all in on a 36-year-old goalie

The Leafs had a busy start to free agency. After missing the playoffs last season, the front office moved fast. Bobrovsky was their biggest get. He’s 36, sure, but he just backstopped Florida to two Cups and has over 400 career wins. Toronto hasn’t had a goalie with that kind of resume in decades.

Bobrovsky started his career undrafted with the Flyers. He won the Vezina Trophy twice in Columbus, in 2013 and 2017. But his legacy is really about the last few years. He helped the Panthers beat the Leafs twice in the postseason. That history isn’t lost on anyone.

“This is Toronto. It’s the capital of hockey in my mind,” he said. “The fans are excited. There is going to be a great atmosphere, and I’m excited about that. It’s a big responsibility and I’m looking forward to helping this team win.”

What this means for the Leafs’ playoff hopes

Toronto hasn’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967. That’s a long time. Bobrovsky knows the pressure. He’s been in high-stakes situations his whole career. The Leafs are betting he can handle the spotlight and maybe even change the culture in the room. But he’s also 36, and the team has not confirmed whether he’ll be the clear No. 1 starter or part of a rotation.

Fans online noted the irony immediately. The guy who knocked Toronto out of the playoffs is now their best hope. Stranger things have happened, probably.

Bobrovsky didn’t dodge the question about leaving Florida. He just said things worked out the way they did. That’s about as honest as you get in a press conference. He’s not pretending this was his first choice. But he’s here now, and he sounds ready to prove something.
