A 40-Year-Old Goalkeeper Just Broke Instagram — and Spain Never Saw Him Coming

One week ago, Vozinha was a name known mainly to Cape Verdean fans and hardcore World Cup followers. Then he faced Spain.

On Monday night in Atlanta, the 40-year-old goalkeeper put on a clinic — seven saves, a clean sheet, and a 0-0 draw against one of the tournament favorites. By Tuesday morning, his Instagram following had exploded from 50,000 to 6.3 million. That’s a jump so staggering that only five England players — Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice — still have larger audiences on the platform.

“That is insane, I didn’t expect that,” Vozinha told the Men in Blazers podcast. “Things run fast on Instagram, but I didn’t believe it. I still don’t believe, but it is what it is. Thank you to everyone.”

A Performance for the Ages

Spain entered the match as heavy favorites, boasting a roster full of attacking talent. But Vozinha turned the game into his personal highlight reel. He denied Alvaro Morata from close range, tipped a Lamine Yamal rocket over the bar, and smothered a late scramble in the box with the calm of a man half his age.

The clean sheet made him the oldest goalkeeper in World Cup history to achieve that feat on his tournament debut. According to match data, the only other keeper over 40 to make more saves in a single World Cup match was Northern Ireland’s Pat Jennings, who stopped 10 shots against Brazil in 1986.

Putting Cape Verde on the Map

Vozinha’s viral moment has also cast a spotlight on Cape Verde, an island nation off West Africa with a population of roughly 500,000 — making it the third smallest country ever to qualify for a World Cup. The goalkeeper reflected on what it means for the next generation. “The World Cup is the big stage in the whole of football and it is every kid’s dream to be here one day,” he said. “When we inspire the next generation it is always good. To hear kids say one day they want to be Vozinha, I am very grateful.”

Social media users noted the irony: a nation of just 10 volcanic islands producing a goalkeeper who has practically gone viral overnight. Fans online flooded his comment section with messages in Portuguese, English, and Creole, many calling him “the wall” and “Cape Verde’s greatest export.”

Cape Verde returns to action Sunday against Uruguay in Miami, then closes group play June 26 against Saudi Arabia. If Vozinha replicates Monday’s heroics, don’t be surprised if that follower count doubles again.
