Barcelona Eyeing Benjamin Sesko as Lewandowski Replacement Plan B

Barcelona has a problem up front, and they’re running out of easy answers. Robert Lewandowski is gone at the end of this month, his contract expired, and the Blaugrana need a center-forward who can actually lead the line next season. Their first choice is Julian Alvarez, but that deal is stuck in quicksand.

Atletico Madrid recently turned down a £129 million offer from Real Madrid for Alvarez. Yes, you read that right. And they’re holding out for even more. So unless Barcelona finds a treasure chest somewhere, they might have to look elsewhere.

According to Marca, one name on their shortlist is Manchester United’s Benjamin Sesko. The 23-year-old Slovenian striker joined United last summer in a deal worth up to £74 million from RB Leipzig. His first season in England was a mixed bag. He started slow, struggled to find his rhythm, but then flipped a switch in the second half of the campaign. By the end, he looked like the kind of physical, athletic number nine who can bully defenders and run channels all day.

Sesko’s Skills and Flaws

Sesko has all the raw tools you’d want in a modern striker. Explosive pace, legit aerial dominance, and a work rate that doesn’t quit. He’s got technical ability too, but the knock on him is decision-making in the final third. Sometimes he rushes a shot or picks the wrong pass. That’s fixable with coaching and experience, but Barcelona would be betting on his ceiling more than his current production.

United’s Stance Is Clear

Here’s the thing: Manchester United doesn’t want to sell. They’re happy with his development and see him as the long-term answer at striker. The club is actually looking to bring in a backup for him, not sell the main guy. That’s partly because Joshua Zirkzee hasn’t worked out the way they hoped. So Sesko is firmly in United’s plans, and any offer would need to be stupid money to even get them to listen.

Barcelona also has other options. Serhou Guirassy and Karl Etta Eyong are on their list too. But neither has the same kind of upside or physical profile as Sesko.

Right now this feels like a backup plan for a backup plan. Alvarez is still the priority. Barca knows that. But if they can’t pry him out of Atletico, don’t be surprised if they test United’s resolve with a serious bid. Whether United bites is a whole different question.
