Pittsburgh Penguins Top Darnell Nurse’s Trade List as Oilers Rebuild Looms

There’s a name at the top of Darnell Nurse’s preferred trade destinations, and it’s one that makes a lot of sense for both sides. According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Pittsburgh Penguins are sitting at No. 1 on the list the veteran defenseman gave Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman last week.

Pagnotta reported on Thursday that the Penguins and Oilers have had discussions about a potential deal. Nurse, 31, reportedly included five teams he’d waive his no-movement clause for, with Pittsburgh leading the pack.

“Edmonton GM Stan Bowman is not going to rush into a move, but some believe we’ll see a trade around the NHL Draft,” Pagnotta said.

Now, nothing is imminent. The Oilers have been here before — big names, heavy rumors, a lot of smoke that didn’t lead to a fire. But this one feels different. Nurse has been an Oiler since they took him seventh overall in 2013, and he’s logged over a decade on Edmonton’s blue line. But after two straight trips to the Stanley Cup Final followed by a first-round exit to the Anaheim Ducks this spring, change is coming.

Nurse’s contract is the elephant in the room. He’s got four years left at a $9.25 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season. That deal has been a frequent topic of criticism around the league, but he still plays heavy minutes and can hold down a top-four role. The Penguins, meanwhile, are sitting on a mountain of cap space — PuckPedia projects them with over $37 million to spend this summer. Kyle Dubas could absorb Nurse’s salary without breaking a sweat.

And on the ice, it could work. Nurse would slot in alongside either Erik Karlsson or Kris Letang on Pittsburgh’s blue line. That is, unless one of those veterans gets moved first, which isn’t out of the question given where this team is headed.

Nurse’s recent playoff performances have drawn heat from fans and media. But he’s still a 31-year-old defenseman who eats minutes and can play physical. In the right system, with the right partner, he could bounce back. Pittsburgh is betting they can be that place.

It’s worth wondering what Edmonton would want in return. The Oilers are not just rebuilding — they’re retooling on the fly while Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are still in their prime. That means they need players who can help now, not just draft picks. If Bowman and Dubas can find common ground, a deal around the NHL Draft next week is plausible.

For now, it’s one of the more intriguing storylines heading into draft weekend. Nurse wants out. Pittsburgh wants in. And the cap space lines up. Sometimes the obvious move is the one that actually happens.
