Arsenal Joins the Race for Igor Thiago. That Puts Man United in a Spot.

Manchester United spent nearly £74 million on Benjamin Sesko last summer, and he’s delivered. So signing another striker right now feels a little weird on paper. But paper doesn’t tell the whole story, and the club’s forward room is suddenly looking thin.

Rasmus Hojlund’s loan to Napoli turned permanent for £38 million. That deal went through. And Joshua Zirkzee is still being linked with an exit, with two transfer windows of chatter finally pointing toward a real departure. If both of those guys are gone, United are basically down to Sesko and whatever else they have left.

Enter Igor Thiago. Brentford’s Brazilian striker finished second in the Premier League goal charts last season, only behind Erling Haaland. And while Haaland plays for a team that feeds him chances like clockwork, Thiago did it for Brentford. The difference in quality between those two sides makes what he did look even better. 23 goals for a mid-table club is no accident.

According to a report from Rtie Sporte, Arsenal have now entered the picture. Mikel Arteta sees Thiago as someone who can raise the technical level of the Gunners’ attack, which already has some firepower but clearly needs more consistency in front of goal. The report says both clubs are monitoring the situation, and if both are serious, this could turn into a real tug-of-war.

It feels like last summer all over again, when United and Arsenal both went after Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal won that fight. United fans remember it, and they’re probably not thrilled to see the same thing playing out again with another top target.

There might be one advantage here though. Three Brazilians already in Manchester — Casemiro, Antony, and Matheus Cunha — could help sway Thiago’s decision. That kind of pull is real, especially for a player who’s still settling into life in England.

The Golden Boot might not leave Manchester either way. Haaland is at City. If Thiago ends up at United, the hardware could stay on one side of the city or the other. But that’s a detail for later. Right now, the question is whether INEOS moves fast enough to stop Arsenal from poaching another one of their top targets.
