The Premier League released the full 2026/27 fixture list Friday morning, and Manchester City’s road back to the top starts with a pretty clear message. They open at home against Bournemouth on Sunday, August 23, with a 2 p.m. kickoff on Sky Sports.
That’s the easy part. The hard part is everything that comes after — and there’s a lot of it.
What City’s path looks like
New manager Enzo Maresca takes over after Pep Guardiola’s legendary decade-long run ended with a domestic cup double but no league title. City have now gone back-to-back seasons without winning the Premier League, a strange reality for a club that won four straight from 2021 to 2024. Arsenal have taken advantage, and City’s summer shopping list reflects the urgency to close that gap.
The early months don’t ease Maresca into anything. September brings a trip to Old Trafford and a home match against Sunderland. October is brutal: Liverpool away, Aston Villa away, then Brighton at home sandwiched between. November includes a trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal, which could already be a defining moment depending on how the first two months shake out.
December is a slog — seven league games, including Chelsea at home, Newcastle away, and a stretch where they play Hull City and then turn around to face the Magpies and Everton on the road. The holiday fixture list does not mess around.
Transfer business will define this team
Sporting Director Hugo Viana is reportedly leading the charge on a potentially record-breaking move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. There’s also persistent interest in Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, though that one depends on outgoings. And there are questions about outgoings — Rodri, Nico González, Tijjani Reijnders, and Mateo Kovačić all have uncertain futures.
On the positive side, the club is close to locking down long-term extensions for Phil Foden, Joško Gvardiol, and Jeremy Doku. Rodri has also been offered a fresh deal. That kind of contract security matters, especially with speculation swirling around James Trafford, Rúben Dias, Rico Lewis, Savinho, and Omar Marmoush after City finished second in the league and exited the Champions League in the round of 16.
This is a club in transition, but it’s not a rebuild. The calendar says the title chase starts in August. The work to make sure they’re ready for it started months ago.
