Tottenham Hotspur isn’t just lurking in the background of the Mateus Fernandes sweepstakes. They’re making noise. And if you’re Manchester United, that noise should be getting louder by the day.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi has made the 21-year-old West Ham midfielder a priority. The Hammers have set an asking price of £80 million — roughly $106.7 million — and they’re not budging, despite getting relegated. That’s a tough spot for any suitor, but Tottenham seems ready to play ball.
The Race Has Layers
It’s not just a two-horse race either. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have been circling Fernandes for a while. But Tottenham’s interest feels different. More urgent. Ornstein reports that Spurs are desperate to avoid another disaster season like the last two, and they’re willing to back De Zerbi hard to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Fernandes is seen as the kind of young, dynamic presence who can reshape a midfield. And De Zerbi is a known fan of the Portugal international, which adds real weight to the pursuit.
On top of all that, Tottenham is also keeping tabs on Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. Ornstein describes the Tonali interest as separate from the Fernandes push, but it shows Spurs are serious about overhauling the middle of the park.
United Has Reasons to Be Nervous
Manchester United already locked up Ederson from Atalanta, but Michael Carrick wants a full midfield rebuild. Fernandes was the next name on the list after United walked away from Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali — both too expensive for their liking. But now Tottenham is in the mix, and that complicates things.
The good news for United? Fernandes reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford. He’s keen to play alongside his idol, Bruno Fernandes. That kind of personal connection can matter in these deals. But it’s not a done deal. Not by a long shot.
INEOS has to be careful here. A late hijack from Tottenham — or even Madrid or PSG — would sting. And with the transfer window still open, anything can happen.
For now, United holds an edge, but it’s thin. The next few weeks will tell us if that preference for Bruno is enough to hold off a very motivated Spurs side.
