Thierry Henry Says Cristiano Ronaldo’s Style Is Killing Portugal’s Attack at the World Cup

Portugal walked into NRG Stadium ready to make a statement. They walked out with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo and a whole lot of questions about their star man up top.

Thierry Henry didn’t wait long to ask them. During his post-match analysis, the French legend pointed straight at Cristiano Ronaldo and said what a lot of people have been thinking. Ronaldo lined up as Portugal’s center-forward against DR Congo, but Henry says he’s not playing like one. And that’s a problem.

“He’s playing as a 9, but he’s never been a 9 and he’s not acting as a 9,” Henry said.

The numbers back him up. Ronaldo finished the match with just 25 touches and zero shots on target. For a guy who’s built an entire career on putting the ball in the net, that stat line is ugly. He spent more time drifting into space looking for his own opportunity than he did occupying defenders or creating room for the guys around him. Portugal’s attack suffered because of it.

Portugal’s early promise fizzled fast

João Neves headed in a Pedro Neto cross in the sixth minute, and it looked like Portugal might run away with it. They didn’t. DR Congo grew into the game, and in first-half stoppage time, Yoane Wissa powered home a header from Arthur Masuaku’s delivery. That was DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal. And their first ever point. They earned both of them.

Portugal threw bodies forward in the second half but never really looked like breaking through. DR Congo sat deep, stayed organized, and made Portugal work for every inch of space. Without a true focal point in the middle, Portugal’s attacks kept breaking down around the edge of the box.

Henry sees a bigger issue than one bad game

This wasn’t just about a frustrating draw. Henry’s critique went deeper. He’s essentially saying Ronaldo’s role is fundamentally broken. Ronaldo wants the ball at his feet in space. A traditional No. 9 wants to pin defenders, make runs in behind, and open up the channel for wingers and midfielders. Those are two very different jobs, and Ronaldo is doing the first one while Portugal needs the second.

Portugal’s next test comes against Uzbekistan. They need to win that game to stay in control of Group K. If Ronaldo keeps playing like a wandering superstar instead of a team’s center forward, Henry thinks Portugal might not have the answers they think they do.
