John Wall Breaks Silence on Wizards’ No. 1 Pick — and His Choice Is Turning Heads

John Wall has never been shy about speaking his mind. And with the Washington Wizards holding the top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, the franchise icon just threw his weight behind a prospect who’s been overshadowed by a more hyped name.

When asked during a Yahoo Sports! segment which player he would take with the No. 1 overall selection, Wall didn’t hesitate. “If I was number one, I’m taking… For me, I’m taking Darryn Peterson number one. But I got AJ Dybantsa second.”

The 35-year-old former All-Star didn’t elaborate on his reasoning — but the choice itself is generating plenty of conversation.

Why Peterson Over Dybantsa?

Peterson, the former Kansas guard, put up impressive numbers last season: 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, shooting 43.8% from the field and 38.2% from deep. But questions have followed him about his motor. He frequently subbed himself out of games during the 2025-26 campaign, raising concerns about his willingness to grind through tough minutes.

On pure talent, Peterson is electric. Scouts rave about his crafty finishing and smooth stroke. But the effort question is a red flag that some teams won’t ignore.

Dybantsa’s Case Is Loud and Clear

Meanwhile, AJ Dybantsa played every single game for BYU and earned First-Team All-American honors. He led the nation in scoring at 25.5 points per game, adding 6.8 boards, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals while shooting 51.0% from the field and 33.1% from three. He’s the safer bet — polished, durable, and battle-tested.

But Wall sees something in Peterson that stats can’t fully capture. Fans online noted that Wall, a former explosive guard himself, might be drawn to Peterson’s flash and creativity. Others pointed out that Wall’s career was also plagued by injury and inconsistency — perhaps he sees a kindred spirit.

What the Wizards Will Actually Do

The Wizards have not tipped their hand. General manager Will Dawkins and the front office have kept their draft plans close to the vest, though mock drafts overwhelmingly favor Dybantsa. Still, Wall’s opinion carries weight in Washington. He spent a decade with the organization, leading them to multiple playoff runs and earning five All-Star nods.

The draft kicks off on June 23 at 8 p.m. EST, with the first round airing on ABC and ESPN. Whether the Wizards listen to their franchise legend — or go with the consensus — could shape the team’s direction for years.
