Xabi Alonso is reportedly looking to reunite with Álvaro Carreras at Stamford Bridge, but any hope Manchester United fans had of cashing in on a second transfer fee for the former academy star is already dead in the water.
According to AS, Chelsea have made an exploratory inquiry about Carreras, who spent last season at Real Madrid after a complicated path through Benfica and, earlier, United’s youth system. The Blues are suddenly in the market for left-back depth after Marc Cucurella’s shock move to Madrid, and Alonso—who coached Carreras during their shared time at the Santiago Bernabéu—knows the 22-year-old’s game well.
“It’s merely an exploratory approach, testing the waters in terms of the potential transfer fee and the player’s availability,” AS reports.
Carreras’ debut season at Madrid was a mixed bag. He started brightly under Alonso’s stewardship, logging 40 appearances across all competitions and chipping in with two goals and three assists. But minutes dried up as the year went on, and there was even an ugly incident where teammate Antonio Rüdiger slapped him during a training scuffle. Now, with Cucurella on board, Carreras’ role looks even less secure.
United fans might remember Carreras as the 2021/22 Under-23 Player of the Year at Old Trafford, a left-back who never made a senior appearance but went on loan to Preston North End and Granada before Benfica picked him up for €9 million. Madrid bought him from there, and United—having smartly inserted a 15% sell-on clause into his Benfica exit—pocketed £7.5 million when that transfer went through.
But here’s the kicker: that clause was a one-time payout. The Manchester Evening News has confirmed that United have no future sell-on rights attached to Carreras. If Chelsea come calling with a fee, every single pound goes to Madrid.
For United, it’s a case of déjà vu—another academy product flourishing elsewhere while the club watches from the sidelines, financially locked out of his next move. For Alonso and Chelsea, it’s a low-risk gamble on a player who already knows the Premier League culture and could provide competition for the left-back spot without breaking the bank.
Whether Madrid will sell remains unclear. The club has reportedly not informed Carreras of any concrete plans, though sources describe him as “not untouchable.” That opens the door for Alonso to push for a deal—and for Chelsea to land a defender still searching for his long-term home.
