Manchester United is in the market for a midfield upgrade this summer. That much has been clear for weeks. But the real question is whether they can actually land one of their preferred targets.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the club has internally discussed Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga as a serious option. The French midfielder checks a lot of boxes for what United manager Michael Carrick wants in the middle of the pitch — he runs, he tackles, he plays with intensity. He’s also made it clear he doesn’t want to go anywhere.
Romano said on his YouTube channel that Camavinga wants to stay in Madrid. He wants to be part of Carlo Ancelotti’s project next season. So unless the player changes his mind, this deal is going to be complicated.
The Contract Situation
Camavinga is under contract at the Santiago Bernabéu through the summer of 2029. That gives Real Madrid all the leverage. If United wants him, they’ll have to pay a premium. And even then, the player has to agree to leave. Right now, he doesn’t.
Last season, the 23-year-old played 43 matches across all competitions for Los Blancos. He scored two goals and added one assist. Not flashy numbers, but his value goes beyond the stat sheet. He’s a ball-winner who reads the game well, breaks up opposition attacks, and keeps possession moving. He can play as a box-to-box midfielder, a defensive midfielder, or even on the left side if needed.
Premier League Fit
The big question is whether he can handle the Premier League’s physicality. That’s the worry with a lot of La Liga imports. Camavinga is strong on the ball and aggressive off it, but the pace and contact in England are different. Some scouts have flagged that concern internally.
Still, at 23, he’s young enough to adapt. And United’s midfield needs the kind of energy he brings. Carrick has been looking for a player who can cover ground and help the team press higher up the field. Camavinga fits that profile.
But the player’s stance is the problem. Camavinga has told people close to him he’s happy in Madrid. He feels he can still be an important piece there. Unless that changes, United might have to move on to other targets like Manu Koné, who Romano also mentioned as a similar type of player.
For now, the Camavinga situation sits in a holding pattern. United is watching. Real Madrid isn’t selling. And the player isn’t pushing for a move. That could change in the final weeks of the window, but it’s not trending that way.
One thing is certain — if Carrick wants his man, he’ll have to be patient. And maybe a little lucky.
