Chelsea Just Jumped Ahead of Man United in the Race for Manu Kone

Manchester United thought they had a clear path to Manu Kone this summer. That path just got a whole lot more crowded.

According to Corriere della Sera, as relayed by Sport Witness, Chelsea have already had discussions with AS Roma about the French midfielder. The Blues are already talking to Roma about Alejandro Garnacho, and Kone’s name came up in those conversations. That’s a problem for United, who have been linked with the 25-year-old for weeks but haven’t made a formal offer yet.

Kone is exactly the kind of midfielder United need right now. Since Casemiro left, the midfield has been patched together with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans — both good players, but neither is a pure destroyer. Kone brings steel, stamina, and athleticism that would complement Kobbie Mainoo’s creative tendencies. He’s a guy who covers ground, wins tackles, and doesn’t mind getting stuck in. That’s the profile United have been searching for.

His career path is interesting. Kone came up at Toulouse, moved to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2021 where injuries slowed him down, then landed at Roma on loan in 2024. That loan turned permanent because he was that good. Last season he started 33 of 37 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice and adding three assists. Not flashy numbers, but his impact goes beyond the stat sheet.

He also started four of France’s seven games at the 2026 World Cup, including the semifinal against Spain. France lost that one 2-0, but Kone held his own in midfield against a team that controlled possession all night. That kind of big-game experience matters.

Here’s where it gets dicey for United. Chelsea have already held initial conversations about a potential €50 million move. They’re also deep in talks with Roma about Garnacho, so they have a foot in the door already. The report makes it clear these are likely separate transactions — no straight swap between Garnacho and Kone — but Chelsea being in the room gives them an inside track.

United haven’t made a concrete move yet. They’ve done their homework, made some calls, but nothing formal. Chelsea could accelerate talks and steal a march on them. If United want Kone, they need to act fast. Letting a Premier League rival swoop in for a player who fits their system this well would be a tough look.

Kone turns 26 next season. He’s entering his prime. His athleticism, work rate, and ability to read the game make him a plug-and-play option for a top Premier League side. Roma know what they have and won’t let him go cheap.

For now, it’s a waiting game. But Chelsea just made the first real move. United better be ready to respond.
