Lucas Digne’s Blunder Hands Spain a Penalty and France a Very Real Problem

France had been solid all tournament. They hadn’t trailed once. That ended in a moment of madness from Lucas Digne.

The left back, who’s reportedly drawing interest from PSG, tried to clear a ball in his own box and completely lost track of Lamine Yamal. He didn’t just foul him. He clattered into him with enough force that the referee didn’t even hesitate. The whistle went. Point to the spot.

VAR took a look anyway, because that’s what VAR does. But there was no saving Digne here. The call stood.

Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up and buried it. Calm as you like. Spain 1, France 0.

It’s the first time Les Bleus have been behind in this whole tournament. And now they’ve got a real test in front of them. Spain isn’t the kind of team you just flip a switch against. They’ll keep the ball, they’ll make you chase, and if you give them an inch they’ll take a mile. Digne basically handed them a mile.

A Semifinal That Needed a Spark

The match had been lively but not exactly overflowing with chances before that. Both sides looked sharp, but nobody could break through. It felt like a game waiting for something to happen — a moment of brilliance or a catastrophic mistake. Digne chose the latter.

It’s a tough beat for a guy who’s been decent enough in this tournament. But that’s the nature of knockout soccer. One slip and your name is the headline.

France now has to chase the game against a Spain side that’s perfectly comfortable sitting on a lead. They’ve got the talent to do it, obviously. Kylian Mbappé doesn’t disappear for long. But the longer this goes, the more Spain can just strangle the tempo.

What Comes Next

France needs an answer and they need it soon. They’ve got the firepower to get back into this, but they can’t afford another mistake. Spain smells blood now. And Oyarzabal’s penalty just made this semifinal a whole lot more interesting.
