Ander Herrera Returns to Boyhood Club 15 Years Later, Career Coming Full Circle

Ander Herrera is going home. The 36-year-old midfielder has signed a one-year deal with Real Zaragoza, the club where his professional career began. It’s a move that brings his football journey back to where it all started, and it’s probably his last stop before retirement.

Zaragoza announced the signing on Tuesday, confirming Herrera will play in Spain’s third division, the Primera Federación. The club is chasing promotion, and they’re bringing in a veteran who knows what it takes to win at the highest level.

“Now, with nearly 600 professional appearances under his belt, Ander returns home to Real Zaragoza,” the club said in a statement. “The club is incredibly excited about this high-caliber addition for the upcoming season.”

Herrera came up through Zaragoza’s youth system before moving to Athletic Club in 2011. Three years later, Manchester United triggered his €36 million release clause and brought him to the Premier League. That’s where he really made a name for himself.

The Manchester United years

Herrera spent five seasons at Old Trafford, making 189 appearances and scoring 20 goals. He wasn’t the flashiest player on the pitch, but fans loved him for the way he played. Tireless. Relentless. He’d chase down lost causes, get stuck into tackles, and celebrate every win like it was his last. That energy made him a cult hero.

He won the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Community Shield, and the 2016/17 Europa League with United. Contract talks broke down in 2019, though, and he left on a free transfer to join Paris Saint-Germain.

In Paris, Herrera was more of a squad player than a star. Injuries and competition for minutes limited his starts, but he was solid enough to help PSG dominate domestically. He picked up a few more trophies before heading back to Athletic Club in 2022.

After a second stint in Bilbao, he moved to Boca Juniors in Argentina. That didn’t last long. Boca and Herrera parted ways by mutual consent last month.

Closing the circle

Now he’s back in Zaragoza, 15 years after leaving. The club is in the third division, which is a far cry from Champions League nights at Old Trafford or the Parc des Princes. But for Herrera, it makes sense. He started here. He’ll finish here.

He’s 36 now. The legs aren’t what they used to be. But Zaragoza isn’t asking him to be the guy who runs through walls every game. They’re asking him to bring experience, leadership, and maybe a few moments of quality that can help push them toward promotion.

The deal is for one year. That’s probably all he has left in the tank. And that’s fine. Sometimes the best way to end a career is to go back to where it started, put your boots on one more time, and see if you’ve still got something left to give.
