The Timberwolves are apparently trying to recruit LeBron James this offseason. And when a reporter asked LaMelo Ball if he’d helped with that, Ball gave a response that left the room cracking up.
“Yeah, whatever you’re thinking,” Ball said Tuesday when a reporter asked if he’d made a pitch to James. That was it. Four words. Deadpan delivery. The whole media session laughed.
Ball just got to Minnesota in a trade from Charlotte. He and Anthony Edwards form what should be one of the most entertaining backcourts in the league. But the frontcourt? That’s a different story. The Timberwolves dealt Naz Reid to the Hornets and Julius Randle to the Nets this offseason. So they’re thin at power forward. Really thin.
That’s where James could fit. He’s 41 now but still averaged 25 points last season. The fit makes some sense on paper. But it’s not like Minnesota is the only team chasing him.
The LeBron sweepstakes are crowded
According to reports, the Cavaliers, 76ers, Warriors, and Heat are all in the mix too. James has been linked to half the league at this point. And none of those teams have officially confirmed anything. It’s still speculation. But the buzz is real.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch recently said he doesn’t see Jaden McDaniels automatically sliding to power forward next season. So the door is open for someone else. Someone like LeBron.
Ball’s joke might have just been a joke. But it also might have been a wink. Either way, it got people talking. And for a team trying to land the biggest free agent in history, that’s probably not the worst thing.
An answer from James could come soon. The offseason is still young though. We’re barely past the midway point of summer. So for now, everyone is waiting.
