Ederson is heading back to Bergamo after what was supposed to be a summer transfer to Manchester United fell apart in spectacular fashion. Two rounds of medicals. Two times the Red Devils flagged concerns about his knee. And now the Brazilian midfielder is stuck in limbo while Atalanta tries to figure out what comes next.
According to Sky, United pulled the plug after the second set of tests revealed lingering questions about Ederson’s knee. The same knee that Atalanta insists is perfectly fine. The same player they’ve watched train and play without issue. It’s a rare situation, and it’s left everyone involved scratching their heads.
United didn’t waste much time moving on. They turned around and dropped cash on Andrey Santos, another midfielder from Chelsea. Meanwhile, Atalanta lost out on what would have been a €45 million payday, but the club isn’t panicking. At least not yet.
Contract extension or exit door?
Ederson’s current deal runs through June 2027, which gives Atalanta some leverage but not unlimited time. The club is optimistic he’ll sign a new contract, per Sky. They’re even floating the idea of a release clause to sweeten the deal and convince him to stay long-term. That’s from La Gazzetta dello Sport via Tuttomercatoweb.
But here’s the thing. Ederson had more than one foot out the door. He was mentally preparing for Manchester. He was gone. Now he’s back, and motivation matters. Atalanta can technically wait until January to figure this out, but if he turns down the renewal, they’ll have to find a buyer anyway. And they won’t get €45 million again.
Milan lurking but not acting
AC Milan is the other name floating around. Fabrizio Romano reported that both the club and manager Ruben Amorim like Ederson. But liking a player and signing him are two different things. Milan hasn’t made a serious move yet, mostly because their midfield situation is a mess right now.
They need to offload Youssouf Fofana and Ruben Loftus-Cheek before they can add anyone. They’re also waiting to see what happens with Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot, two veterans whose decisions could reshape their whole summer plans. Until that clears up, Ederson is a nice idea more than a real target.
So Ederson waits. Atalanta hopes. And Milan watches from a distance. The ball is in everyone’s court at the same time, which is how these things usually go in July.
