The Chicago Bulls are 0-2 in Summer League, but that’s not the story anyone’s talking about. The story is Caleb Wilson, the No. 4 overall pick, who looks like he might be the real prize of this draft class.
Through two games, the 19-year-old forward is averaging 27.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks. He’s finishing through traffic, blocking shots he has no business reaching and playing defense like a guy who actually wants to be there. The Bulls haven’t had a rookie generate this kind of buzz in years.
ESPN’s Seth Greenberg went on Get Up Tuesday and made a pretty bold claim about Wilson’s long-term potential.
“When you look at upside, someone’s potential – not right now, but two to three years from now, he has the greatest upside of all these rookies,” Greenberg said.
That’s not just empty analyst talk either. Vince Goodwill joined the segment and pointed out that Wilson looks more polished than most recent No. 4 picks. He mentioned Kon Knueppel, Scottie Barnes, guys who’ve carved out real careers. And then he dropped a name that gets your attention.
“I remember going into the draft, talking to people, they were saying this could be the most talented guy that can develop like giving you Kevin Garnett vibes,” Goodwill said.
Garnett vibes. That’s not something you hear about every rookie who puts up numbers in July.
Goodwill also highlighted something that doesn’t always show up in stat sheets: Wilson hates losing. Even a Summer League game. He’s competitive, he’s active defensively and he doesn’t panic when the defense collapses on him. That mindset, combined with the physical tools, is why the Bulls front office — led by new executive Bryson Graham and coach Tiago Splitter — is reportedly thrilled with what they’ve seen.
Chicago’s had a rough run the last few years. Bad lottery luck, questionable roster moves, organizational instability. But if Wilson keeps playing like this, they might have finally found a foundation piece. A guy you can actually build something around.
The Bulls get another shot at their first Summer League win Tuesday night against the Washington Wizards. That game also features Wilson going head-to-head with No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa. It’s the kind of rookie matchup that’ll tell you a little more about where both players really are.
Two games is a tiny sample size. But Wilson’s start has been loud enough that people are starting to pay attention.
