Manchester United Pulled Out of Ederson Deal After Second Medical. Here’s Why It’s Final.

Manchester United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson is officially dead. According to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, the deal is not expected to be revisited or reactivated at any point this summer.

That puts to rest any lingering hope from fans who thought the move might still happen. And it closes the book on what turned into one of the more confusing sagas of this window.

The medical that changed everything

Ederson, 27, had essentially agreed to join United. A four-year contract with a club option for an extra year was in place. The Brazilian midfielder turned down interest from Atletico Madrid to prioritize a move to Old Trafford. A £39 million fee had been settled with Atalanta.

Then Brazil called him up for the World Cup. That delayed the medical, which is where things got complicated.

Concerns came up during the first round of testing. United planned to run a second exam once Ederson’s tournament ended. That second medical happened last week, and according to club sources, that’s when the decision was made to walk away. Sporting director Jason Wilcox was reportedly the one leading the charge to pull the plug.

But here’s where it gets messy. At the same time United were backing out on Ederson, they were negotiating with Aston Villa for Youri Tielemans and had already reached a £50 million agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos. That timing makes it hard to believe the medical was the only factor.

Atalanta, for what it’s worth, strongly disputes United’s claim that Ederson has a long-term knee issue. The Serie A side is prepared to offer him a new five-year deal instead.

Mixed signals from the media

For a few days, it wasn’t clear whether this deal was truly dead or just on life support. David Ornstein of The Athletic reported United might reopen talks later in the window, though he wasn’t sure Atalanta or Ederson would be interested at that point. Simon Stone of the BBC added that well-placed sources said the transfer could be resurrected depending on how the window develops, but not on the same terms.

Romano killed all of that speculation with one tweet: “Éderson to Manchester United not expected be revisited or reactivated at any time this summer. Discussions completely collapsed since Friday last week, as revealed. Éderson has received new contract proposal from Atalanta.”

He and Gianluca Di Marzio were among the first to report the deal had fallen apart last week, while British-based reporters were still briefing that United hadn’t made a final decision. The gap between what Italian and British sources were saying created real confusion for fans tracking the story.

What happens next

Ederson is understood to be genuinely disappointed the move fell through. He had his heart set on playing for United under Michael Carrick. But from United’s perspective, walking away was probably the smart play if those medical concerns were real. You don’t sink almost £40 million into a player with a knee problem, no matter how talented he is.

Atalanta is now pushing to lock him into a long-term extension. Whether Ederson signs it or holds out for another big move later is the next question.

For United, the midfield rebuild continues elsewhere. Tielemans and Santos are the names to watch now.
