Luis Arraez Sets a Hard Line on Position as Trade Rumors Swirl Around Giants

The San Francisco Giants stumbled through the first half of 2026, and now the rumor mill is doing what it always does with a team hovering around .500 at the break. Luis Arraez’s name keeps popping up. That’s just how it goes when you’re hitting .330 with an OPS north of .800 and your team might not be in it for the long haul.

Arraez signed with the Giants in free agency over the winter, his first season in San Francisco. Whether he finishes it there is an open question with the August 3 trade deadline creeping closer. But here’s what he’s not budging on: where he plays.

“This is a business, so whatever team wants to give me the opportunity to help, it’s going to be at second base,” Arraez told MLB.com. “I don’t like to go back to first base; I prepared my mind, I prepared my body to only play second base. One hundred percent, I’m staying at second.”

That’s a clear message for any front office sniffing around. Arraez has played first base and DH plenty in the past, most of last season with the Padres after Miami shipped him out in 2024. But he’s drawing a line now. He wants the keystone, and he says that’s non-negotiable.

It’s worth noting this would be his second trade in three years if it happens. That’s a quick tour of the league for a guy who’s been an All-Star and is still just 29. He’s slashing .330/.369/.460 this season, numbers that look even better when you consider how few guys around the league are hitting for average like that anymore.

The Giants restart the second half Friday against Seattle, and Arraez will be at second base that night. Probably for a while after that too. But whether he’s a Giant come August is a different story. Teams hunting offense at the deadline are going to call. And if San Francisco decides to sell, Arraez is one of the few tradable pieces who could bring back real value.

He’s made his stance clear on position. The rest of it is just business.
