Philly Fans Turned Willson Contreras Into a Villain at the Home Run Derby. He Loved It.

Philadelphia sports fans don’t exactly have a reputation for subtlety. And at the 2026 Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park, they reminded everyone why. When Red Sox catcher Willson Contreras stepped into the box against hometown hero Kyle Schwarber in the semifinals, the boos started before he even lifted the bat.

Everything Contreras did got a reaction. Taking a pitch? Booed. Hitting a home run? Also booed. Stepping out of the box? You guessed it. The only time the Philly crowd cheered was when Contreras made an out. Phillies fans treating a visiting player like public enemy number one at an exhibition event. Classic stuff.

But here’s the thing — Contreras didn’t seem bothered. Not even a little. Kyle Fisher of MetroPhilly posted on X that “Contreras loved it — absolute cinema to close the semi-finals.” The guy was soaking it up. That’s the kind of energy that makes the Home Run Derby feel less like a skills competition and more like a playoff game.

The Derby That Almost Was

Contreras actually had a solid showing before the Philly faithful got in his head (or tried to). He tied with Cardinals slugger Jordan Walker for the most homers in the opening round with 13. That’s no small thing in a field that included Bryce Harper and Schwarber on their home turf.

But the second round was a different story. Contreras faced off against Schwarber, his former Cubs teammate. It was a tight one — Contreras hit eight homers, Schwarber hit nine. That one extra swing was the difference. Schwarber moved on to the final, where he went head-to-head with Walker (who beat Rays star Junior Caminero 6-5 in the other semifinal).

So Contreras went home without the trophy. But honestly? He’s having a season that might make Red Sox fans forget all about it pretty quickly.

A Venezuelan Catcher Having a Career Year

At 34 years old, Contreras is putting up numbers that don’t look like a guy nearing the back nine of his career. Through the first half of the season, he’s slashing .285/.379/.542 with 20 home runs. That puts him on pace to shatter his career-high of 24 dingers. Not bad for a catcher who’s been around the block a few times.

The Red Sox traded for him thinking they were getting a veteran presence behind the plate. Instead, they might be getting an All-Star who can actually carry the offense on any given night. The Derby loss stings, sure. But it’s June. There’s a lot of baseball left, and Contreras looks like he’s just getting warmed up.

As for the Philly fans — they got what they wanted. Their guy advanced. But Contreras walked off that field with a smirk and probably a few new fans who respect a player who can take a beating and keep smiling.
