Man United Triggers Tielemans Release Clause as Villa Turns Attention to £60m Swiss Star

Manchester United is set to pull Youri Tielemans out of Aston Villa’s midfield after triggering his £35 million release clause. The move is advanced enough that a medical has reportedly been scheduled for Tuesday at Old Trafford, according to ExpressAndStar.com.

Tielemans just wrapped up a World Cup run with Belgium that ended in the quarterfinals against Spain. He picked up an injury during warmups for that game and watched from the sideline as Belgium lost 2-1. That might have been his last meaningful moment in a Villa shirt.

The 29-year-old has been one of Unai Emery’s most reliable pieces since arriving on a free transfer from Leicester in 2023. He piled up 134 appearances and 10 goals across three seasons at Villa Park. His most memorable moment came in the Europa League final against Freiburg, where he opened the scoring with a belter that set the tone for Villa’s emphatic title win.

It hasn’t all been smooth. Tielemans dealt with calf and ankle injuries that kept him out for stretches last season. But when he’s been on the pitch, he’s been the kind of midfielder who controls tempo and rarely gives the ball away cheaply. Villa offered him new terms recently but apparently didn’t move fast enough or high enough to keep him from considering the United offer.

Villa’s midfield takes another hit

This news lands at a rough time for Villa. Amadou Onana tore his ACL while playing for Belgium at the World Cup and is looking at up to nine months on the sideline. That’s two starting midfielders gone in the span of a few weeks, with Tielemans heading out and Onana stuck in rehab.

Villa isn’t sitting still. The club has hijacked Newcastle’s pursuit of Johan Manzambi, a 20-year-old attacking midfielder from Switzerland who’s been tearing it up in Europe. The fee is pushing £60 million, which would make him the most expensive signing in Villa’s history. That’s a lot of pressure for a kid who’s still a couple years away from his prime, but the scouts seem convinced he’s worth it.

Digne could be headed back to Paris

Meanwhile, Lucas Digne might not be at Villa Park much longer either. PSG, fresh off back-to-back Champions League titles, is sniffing around the French left-back. His release clause is reportedly under £10 million, which for a club of PSG’s resources is basically pocket change. Digne was part of France’s World Cup squad and has looked sharp when healthy, but Villa might have to decide whether to keep him or cash in and reinvest somewhere else.

Villa is in a weird spot. They’re losing a proven midfielder, dealing with a long-term injury to another, and potentially shipping out a starting fullback all in one window. But they’re also swinging big on a young star and clearly aren’t afraid to spend. The next few weeks will tell us whether this is a rebuild or a scramble.
