Manchester United Walked Away From Ederson After Medical Checks. Now Atalanta Has a Decision.

Ederson was supposed to be on his way to Manchester United this summer. The two clubs had agreed on a €45 million deal. The Brazilian midfielder had played his way onto United’s radar with a strong season at Atalanta and a decent run with Brazil at the World Cup.

Then the medicals happened.

According to reports out of Italy, the initial round of tests in the United States during the tournament didn’t sit well with United’s medical staff. They brought him to the UK for a second look. That round didn’t change anything. The deal fell apart.

So now Ederson is still an Atalanta player. He’s also in the final year of his contract, which runs through summer 2027. That puts the club in a weird spot.

Atalanta insists there are no serious health issues here. They’re planning to sit down with Ederson’s representatives in the coming weeks and talk about a new deal. The message from Bergamo is basically: we still believe in you, and we want you here.

But you can read between the lines. A fresh contract would protect Atalanta’s leverage. If another club comes calling in January or next summer — and they probably will — having Ederson locked into longer terms and a higher wage bill means the asking price stays strong. It’s business.

Ederson is currently on holiday after Brazil’s World Cup run. He hasn’t commented publicly on the failed United move. His camp hasn’t pushed back on the medical reports either, which is worth noting.

The whole thing is a little awkward. A player who thought he was headed to one of the biggest clubs in the world is back where he started, with his current team having to reassure everyone that he’s fine. Atalanta isn’t worried. But that might not stop other teams from wondering.

For now, Ederson comes back to a squad that clearly values him. Whether that lasts through the rest of the transfer window is another story.
