Courtois Hurt His Knee at the World Cup. Real Madrid Isn’t Panicking About Goalkeeper Depth.

Thibaut Courtois limped off during Belgium’s World Cup match against Spain, and for a split second, Real Madrid fans probably felt their stomachs drop. The big Belgian is the kind of goalkeeper who makes a defense look better than it actually is. Lose him and you’re suddenly a lot more vulnerable.

But here’s the thing: the club isn’t rushing to sign anyone. According to a report from AS, Madrid’s front office has zero interest in bringing in another keeper this summer. They think they’re fine. And they might actually be right.

Courtois hurt himself during the game and had to be subbed out. Not ideal, especially with the new La Liga season right around the corner. But the injury isn’t considered serious. The team expects him to be fully fit for opening day. He’ll take his holiday, do the rehab, and be back between the posts before anyone really has to sweat it.

Now, it’s true that Courtois has dealt with a few nagging injuries over the last couple of seasons. You don’t forget the ACL tear a while back. But neither the player nor the club seems worried about a trend here. They’re actually planning to extend his contract, which runs through 2027. The message from Valdebebas is pretty straightforward: as long as Courtois wants to play and can still move like a spider on caffeine, he’s the guy.

Lunin isn’t just a backup. He’s the backup.

Andriy Lunin signed a contract extension through 2030 last year, and the club loves having him around. He’s professional. He stays ready even when he’s barely playing. That’s harder than it sounds. Most keepers at his level want to start somewhere, but Lunin seems to understand the role. He’s the perfect second-choice: good enough to start for most teams, patient enough to wait for his turn at Madrid.

Behind those two, there’s real young talent coming through. Fran Gonzalez is highly rated internally. The club is actively looking for the right loan spot for him — not just any team, but one where he’ll actually play. They want him in La Liga or at a similar level. Javi Navarro, who just helped Spain win the U19 Euros, is expected to move up to Real Madrid Castilla next season and compete with Sergio Mestre for the starting job there.

So the depth chart looks like this: a world-class starter who’s still elite when healthy, a trusted backup who doesn’t complain, and two academy kids who could turn into something real. Madrid genuinely sees the goalkeeping position as one of the strongest parts of the squad. And right now, buying another keeper just isn’t part of the plan.
