Paris Saint-Germain is looking at bringing Lucas Digne back to the French capital, and they’ve got a release clause that might make it happen without much of a conversation with Aston Villa. The left-back, now 32, spent three years at PSG between 2013 and 2016 before moving on to Barcelona and then Everton before landing at Villa Park. This feels like a full-circle reunion if it goes through.
Digne just played every minute of France’s 2-0 win over Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals. That game got them to a semifinal against Spain and reminded everyone why he’s still a reliable option at this level. His stock has climbed since the tournament started, and PSG apparently sees him as a quick way to add experienced depth on the left side of their defense. The release clause route means they skip the haggling. Just trigger it and negotiate personal terms.
Villa’s Summer Is Getting Complicated
Unai Emery already has enough on his plate. Aston Villa is trying to hold onto Morgan Rogers with Arsenal circling, and they’ve turned down low offers from Italy for Emiliano Martínez. On top of that, Amadou Onana is out with a long-term ACL injury, which pushed Villa to bring in Johan Manzambi. And Youri Tielemans is reportedly set to join Manchester United. Losing Digne on top of all that would be a real headache.
Digne has been a steady presence at left-back. Not flashy but consistent. Emery knows what he brings, and having a release clause yanked mid-summer makes planning almost impossible. Villa can’t block it. They can only hope Digne decides to stay or that PSG moves on to another target.
There’s no rush on Digne’s end. He’s still with the French national team and won’t make any call until their World Cup run is over. If France goes all the way, that could add a championship glow to his value. But the clause is already set. The number is known. So this really comes down to whether Digne wants to return to a club where he never quite became a star the first time around.
PSG has the money and the opening. Villa has the headache. And the rest of this transfer window might hinge on what one 32-year-old left-back decides to do.
