David Ornstein: Man United Set to Trigger Youri Tielemans’ £35m Release Clause

Manchester United are moving fast on a deal for Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans. David Ornstein broke the news on Tuesday that the club is in advanced talks to sign the Belgian international, and it sounds like this one is close to done.

The Athletic’s transfer guru posted on X that United plans to trigger Tielemans’ £35 million release clause. Villa wanted to keep him. They even offered him a new deal. But the clause takes that choice out of their hands. Ornstein described the situation as Villa having “little choice due to the mechanism” and confirmed United intent to proceed.

Tielemans is 29. He just had a strong World Cup with Belgium, where manager Rudi Garcia called him “outstanding.” At Villa he has been a consistent starter and one of their most reliable midfielders. That production has been hard to ignore.

United’s need in midfield is obvious. Casemiro left this summer when his contract expired. Manuel Ugarte has not worked out the way the club hoped. He has been mostly underwhelming and is now injured. So the depth chart got thin fast.

The club had been linked with Atalanta’s Ederson for weeks. That deal looks dead for now. Ornstein said United may revisit it later in the window, but Tielemans is the priority today.

This feels like a signing with a clear plan behind it. Tielemans knows the Premier League from his Leicester days. He was a key part of their FA Cup win in 2021. He can pass, he can shoot from distance, and he reads the game well. He is not a pure defensive midfielder, but he does not have to be one. United needs someone who can keep possession and connect the play. Tielemans does that.

Fans online are split. Some love the proven experience. Others wonder why United is going after a 29-year-old instead of a younger option. But the release clause makes this clean. No negotiation. No auction. Just pay and bring him in.

He is finally getting that move to a club at the true top of the Premier League. It took longer than some expected. But at this stage of his career, with this price tag, it actually makes a lot of sense.
