Manchester United has not stopped thinking about Harry Kane. That much is clear from the latest reports out of Europe, where the England captain is entering the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich and the rumor mill is already in full swing.
According to TEAMtalk, United’s interest in the 32-year-old striker is very much alive. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s minority owner, is described as a huge fan of Kane. The kind of fan who would love to see him in a red shirt at Old Trafford. And despite the fact that Kane will turn 33 before the next season ends, United is reportedly prepared to finance a move if the opportunity ever opens up.
But here’s the thing. Kane is happy in Munich. His family has settled there. He’s scoring at an absurd rate — 146 goals in 147 games for Bayern — and the team is winning under Vincent Kompany. Contract extension talks are ongoing, and the club is confident he stays. TEAMtalk says Bayern wants the deal done before the season starts, but they’re relaxed about letting it drag into the fall if needed.
Still, the fact that Kane’s contract expires next summer has triggered a lot of interest. Chelsea and Manchester City are also keeping in touch with his camp. Barcelona has made recent inquiries. Real Madrid is lurking. And there’s reportedly a chance Tottenham Hotspur would welcome him back for a blockbuster reunion next summer. That last bit is interesting, because Kane left Tottenham for Bayern in 2023 only after United backed out, spooked by Daniel Levy’s refusal to negotiate with a Premier League rival. United pivoted to Rasmus Hojlund for £72 million. Hojlund was sold to Napoli three years later for roughly half that. Kane has been a machine in Germany.
The Alan Shearer Record Looms
If Kane returns to England, he’d be in position to chase down Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League scoring record. That might matter to a player who cares about legacy. He’s already led England to a World Cup semifinal in North America and captained the Three Lions through some of their best years. Shearer’s record is the last big domestic milestone he hasn’t touched.
United fans like to imagine what Sir Alex Ferguson would have done. The old man spent big on Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, no questions asked. Kane was the best striker in the Premier League during his Tottenham years — 280 goals and 63 assists in 435 games. He was a creator as much as a finisher. Ferguson would have moved heaven and earth to get him, or so the thinking goes.
But that was then. United’s interest now is real but complicated. Kane isn’t getting any younger. Ratcliffe might be dreaming, but Bayern isn’t eager to sell. And the Saudi Pro League and MLS have made their interest known too, though Kane reportedly isn’t considering either option at this stage.
The smart money says Kane stays in Munich. He’s comfortable. He’s productive. His family is happy. But contract talks can stall. And if they do, the vultures — including one very patient club from Manchester — will be circling.
