Strasbourg made it official on Sunday. Hugo Oliveira is the new head coach. The 47-year-old Portuguese coach takes over a club that just missed European qualification and lost in the Conference League semis. But his path here? Not your typical manager story.
Oliveira spent most of his career as a goalkeeping coach. He worked with Marco Silva for seven years across four English clubs — Hull City, Watford, Everton, and Fulham. He only took his first head coaching gig in 2024, leading Famalicao to a fifth-place finish in Portugal’s top division. That was enough to catch BlueCo’s attention.
The ownership group — same guys who run Chelsea — reportedly paid €2 million to buy out his contract. They also considered former Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy. But they went with Oliveira, and he’s already saying the right things.
“It’s an honor to be here and to join such a wonderful project,” he told the club site. “I want to bring emotion, create memories, and give my all to help the club continue to grow.”
The Long Road to the Top Job
Oliveira’s first coaching job was in 2002 with an academy team called USC Paredes. He later spent time at Benfica, where he’s credited with helping develop two of the best goalkeepers in the world — Jan Oblak and Ederson. He also worked with the Portuguese national team and Gil Vicente.
But his big break came as Silva’s assistant. Together they bounced around England, keeping Hull up, pushing Watford into the top half, surviving at Everton, and then building something real at Fulham. Oliveira left that role in 2024 to finally run his own show.
There were reports out of Portugal that Fulham actually considered him as a replacement for Silva this summer, after Silva moved to Benfica. Instead, the Cottagers went with former Real Madrid man Alvaro Arbeloa. Oliveira ended up in Strasbourg.
Now he has to fix a team that came close but couldn’t finish. Gary O’Neil had them in the Conference League semifinals before they got knocked out. They missed qualifying for Europe entirely after that. BlueCo clearly thinks Oliveira can push them over the line.
He’s not the flashiest hire. But he’s got a track record of working with elite talent and a recent sample size of running a team that overperformed. Strasbourg fans might not know what to expect. That’s probably the point.
