Karl Darlow Picks Manchester United Over Leeds. Derby Fans Might Be the Ones Who Really Lose.

Karl Darlow isn’t just leaving Leeds United. He’s going to Manchester United. That stings for Leeds fans, sure. But the real pain might land in Derby County’s lap.

The 35-year-old Welsh goalkeeper turned down a contract extension at Elland Road to become the first player since Alan Smith in 2004 to make that direct switch from Leeds to Old Trafford. It’s a move that leaves Leeds scrambling for a new No. 1 and puts Derby’s Jacob Widell Zetterstrom squarely in the middle of this thing.

Darlow had a hell of a run last season. In the final 17 Premier League games he started under Daniel Farke, Leeds lost only four, kept five clean sheets and clinched top-flight safety with weeks to spare. They finished 14th. That’s not nothing for a team that just came up. But he’s 35. Leeds were never going to build long-term around him, even if some fans wanted to.

Now Leeds are down to two senior goalkeepers, and that number might drop to one. Lucas Perri, who struggled in his first year in England, has been the subject of loan talks. The other option is Alex Cairns, a veteran who has played exactly one game above League One level. Farke is not starting next season with Cairns as his guy. That’s not up for debate.

So the search is on. Leeds have been linked to a handful of keepers, but Zetterstrom keeps coming up. The 27-year-old Swede is entering the final year of his contract at Pride Park and just turned heads at the World Cup. He made nine saves in a 3-0 loss to France. He was solid against Japan. He looked ready for a bigger stage.

(Derby fans probably watched that tournament with mixed feelings. Happy for their guy. Worried about what comes next.)

According to reports, Zetterstrom wants the move to Elland Road. Leeds might also be looking at Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, but recent chatter suggests Suzuki isn’t sold on West Yorkshire. That could push Leeds toward Zetterstrom, who would cost less and already knows the Championship inside out.

For Derby, the timing is brutal. They finished eighth last season, surprising a lot of people. But they’ve got holes all over the roster. Several key loan players went back to their parent clubs. They got Bobby Clark back permanently, but they still need help out wide, behind the striker and maybe in central midfield too. Now they might have to replace their starting goalkeeper on top of all that. Yes, they’d get a fee for Zetterstrom. That helps. But it doesn’t make the shopping list any shorter.

Derby have a lot of work to do this summer. And their best goalkeeper might be the guy who fills Leeds’ biggest need.
