It started with a late-night Instagram Story. It ended with Jacob Tobey losing his job as the voice of the San Antonio Spurs.
The team confirmed the play-by-play announcer has been fired, and the whole thing went viral before most people even had their morning coffee. Tobey’s now ex-girlfriend posted a screenshot of the two of them together around 2 a.m. with a caption that didn’t mince words: she accused him of cheating on her with Loren Waters, the sister of former Spurs guard Lindy Waters III.
“This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters,” she wrote, tagging Waters. “So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not. :)”
Within hours, the post had been screen-captured and shared across social media. Fans tagged the team. Reporters started calling. Front Office Sports got confirmation that Tobey was let go not long after.
According to a Facebook post archived by the Spurs Uncensored page, the timing made the whole thing worse. Tobey’s ex said she was three days into a two-week visit with his parents when she discovered the relationship with Waters. She claimed Tobey’s parents made him take down the original story after he woke up.
“This is now his ex-girlfriend,” she wrote. “I was visiting his family [with] him for two weeks (we were on day 3) when I found out about him and Loren. He woke up. And his parents made him take down the story. Stay safe out there[,] ladies.”
She added a warning that read like a gut punch: “You can be 6 years in visiting grandparents one hour and sleeping in bed the next at his family home and they still will cheat :)”
Who was Jacob Tobey?
Tobey hadn’t been a household name until this week. Before joining the Spurs’ broadcast team, he worked at 9NEWS in Denver and called games for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network. He came across as a straightforward, professional broadcaster. The kind of guy you wouldn’t expect to see trending for a messy personal life.
Now the Spurs have an open seat at the microphone at a pretty interesting time. The team just came off an NBA Finals run, losing to the Knicks in five games. But with Victor Wembanyama and Dylan Harper on the roster, there’s a real chance the next announcer walks into a job that could cover a championship window.
The organization hasn’t made any public statement beyond confirming the firing. No word yet on who’ll be calling preseason games. But given how fast this whole thing blew up, don’t expect them to drag their feet on a replacement.
