Manchester United Beat Out Rivals for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos in £50M Deal

Manchester United just got a lot younger in the middle of the park. The club has agreed to a deal with Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, according to The Athletic. The fee is set at £48 million upfront with another £2 million in add-ons, and Chelsea kept a 10 percent sell-on clause in the deal.

Santos, 22, has already agreed to personal terms and is expected to undergo his medical soon. That means this one is basically done. It’s a quick pivot for United after missing out on a couple of other targets earlier this summer.

Why United needed this move now

The midfield situation at Old Trafford got messy fast. Casemiro left as a free agent, and Manuel Ugarte picked up a long-term injury while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup. That left Michael Carrick’s squad thin in the middle, and they knew they couldn’t wait around.

United tried to land Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, but both players came with price tags the club wasn’t willing to meet. So they turned back to Santos, who they’ve been tracking for a while. The Brazilian had a breakthrough 2025-26 season at Chelsea, playing 43 times across all competitions with three goals and four assists. Not eye-popping numbers, but his impact went beyond the stat sheet.

He’s a physical defensive midfielder who moves the ball forward quickly and can also step into the No. 8 role when needed. That kind of versatility matters for a team that’s still trying to figure out its best combination in midfield.

Santos’s path from Brazil to Manchester

Santos came to Chelsea from Vasco da Gama in 2023. He spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and then Strasbourg before breaking into the Chelsea first team. His season at Stamford Bridge last year changed how people saw him. He went from a promising prospect to a legitimate Premier League midfielder.

Now he gets to make the short trip up the M6 to Manchester, where the expectation is that he’ll slot in right away. United didn’t spend £50 million on a project. They need him to play, and play well, from the jump.

The club has officially confirmed nothing yet, but all signs point to this being announced within the next few days once the medical is completed.
