Manchester United’s Ederson Deal Hangs by a Thread After World Cup Ends

Manchester United’s summer transfer window was supposed to start with Ederson. The Brazilian midfielder, a long-time target for the club, had an agreement in place with Atalanta worth €45 million. But here we are in July, the World Cup is over, and the deal hasn’t gone through. That’s a problem.

Ederson was a late addition to Brazil’s World Cup squad after Wesley got hurt. So he never had a medical before the tournament. That medical was supposed to happen after. Now it’s happening, and according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, United is being extremely careful about what they find.

Jacobs says United will run thorough medical exams before deciding whether to proceed. He doesn’t sound confident. And when a deal that seemed done starts getting cold feet from the buying club, people start wondering what the medical might uncover.

The obvious concern: Ederson might not be fully fit, or there could be something the public doesn’t know yet about his condition. It happens all the time in soccer. A deal looks nailed on, the medical reveals something, and suddenly everyone is scrambling. United fans have seen this before with other transfers that fell apart late.

Why United might walk away

There’s a real argument for pulling the plug. Ederson is 26, he’s played in Serie A, not the Premier League. There’s no guarantee he adapts. Some supporters are already worried he could be another Manuel Ugarte situation — a player who looks good in one league but struggles in another. And if the medical flags something, INEOS might decide it’s not worth the risk.

But here’s the thing. United has been chasing midfield help all summer. They’ve struggled to land their top targets. Ederson is a solid central midfielder. He deserves a chance to prove he can handle England. Pulling out now, after agreeing to terms, would leave the club scrambling for alternatives late in the window.

They’ve already struck a deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos. That helps. But even with Santos and Ederson, United would still be one midfielder short of what Michael Carrick needs to build a reliable engine room. Walking away from Ederson without a replacement lined up would be risky.

For now, everyone waits. Jacobs says clarity should come soon now that the World Cup has finished. Ederson will be hoping his medical goes smoothly. United will be hoping they don’t find something that forces their hand. It’s one of those transfer sagas that could flip either way in the next few days.
