Phillies Shuffle Roster as Brad Keller Returns and Lou Trivino Hits the IL

The Philadelphia Phillies made a series of roster moves right before Wednesday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, and the biggest headline is that Brad Keller is finally back. The reliever had been dealing with a forearm issue and landed on the IL, but the team reinstated him on Wednesday.

Here’s the other side of that coin: right-handed pitcher Lou Trivino III was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right thoracic muscle spasm, retroactive to Tuesday. So the Phillies essentially swapped one arm for another, just not the one they probably wanted to lose.

To fill out the bullpen depth, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Alan Rangel from Triple-A and optioned right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson. That’s a lot of movement for one day, but it tells you a bit about where the front office’s head is at right now.

Keller’s return is a big deal for this bullpen. The 30-year-old has posted a 4.15 ERA so far in the 2026 season, but that number doesn’t tell the whole story. Last year he was sitting on a 2.07 ERA, which is elite for a reliever. The guy can flat-out pitch, and the Phillies need that kind of stability in the late innings.

Right now, Philadelphia sits just two games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. That’s a tight race, especially considering how the season started. The Phillies were up and down early, shaky at times, but they’ve settled in lately. They’re playing solid ball, and the Braves? They’ve been scuffling. That’s the kind of timing you want heading into the All-Star break.

Obviously the Phillies would love to jump ahead of Atlanta before the break. But even if they don’t, they’ve put themselves in strong position. They’re right there, breathing down the Braves’ necks, and that’s all you can ask for at this point in the season.

But for now, the focus is strictly on Wednesday night in Cincinnati. First pitch is at 7:10 PM EST. Just another ball game, but with a division race tightening up, every one matters a little more.
