Real Madrid’s $180M Demand for Tchouameni Puts Manchester United in a Bind

Manchester United’s midfield rebuilding project just hit a wall. And that wall is painted white, stands in Madrid, and carries a price tag of $180 million.

According to Spanish reporter Miguel Serrano, Real Madrid has no interest in selling Aurelien Tchouameni this summer. Unless, of course, someone shows up with an offer that’s hard to ignore. That number, as Serrano tells it, is $180 million. Roughly $154 million in today’s exchange rate. That’s almost double what United paid for Paul Pogba back in 2016, which still stands as the club’s record transfer.

United have already made an offer worth around $100 million, according to reports out of Spain. That’s a hefty chunk of change for most clubs. But for Real Madrid, it’s apparently not enough to get them to the table.

Why Tchouameni is United’s dream target

Fabrizio Romano has been pretty clear about where things stand internally at Old Trafford. The club sees Tchouameni as the ideal replacement for Casemiro, who left a gaping hole in midfield when he departed last year. The Frenchman is 26, has nine trophies to his name, and brings a mix of physicality and technical skill that INEOS values highly.

He’s not Premier League proven, which is the one knock against him. But he’s played at the highest level for both club and country, and he’s already shown he can step into Casemiro’s shoes at Real Madrid. That experience matters.

Mourinho’s return complicates everything

Here’s where it gets interesting. Real Madrid just brought Jose Mourinho back as manager. And while Mourinho reportedly rates Tchouameni, he’s also looking to shake up the midfield. The Portuguese tactician wants more creativity and control in the middle of the park. That could mean moving on from Tchouameni if it helps fund a move for someone like Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez or Manchester City’s Rodri.

But that’s a big if. Mourinho also sees Tchouameni as an essential piece of his system. Serrano’s reporting suggests Madrid would rather keep their No.14 than chase Rodri, who would be both difficult and expensive to pry away from City.

United have held exploratory talks with Tchouameni’s camp. Sources indicate he’d be open to a move to Old Trafford if Madrid forces him out. But that’s the key part: Madrid isn’t forcing him out. They’re setting a price designed to keep him.

The Peoples Person reported earlier that United chiefs, led by sporting director Jason Wilcox, have offered a five-year contract to Tchouameni. That suggests they’re serious about making this happen. But serious intentions and $180 million are two very different things.

For now, the ball is in United’s court. They can either match Madrid’s asking price, walk away, or hope that Mourinho’s desire to reshape the squad creates an opening where none currently exists.
